WWE Recap: Saturday Night Main Event (November 1987)

This episode came after Survivor Series, but was actually taped before, so keep that in mind. Seattle is playing host, and Vince McMahon and Jesse "The Body" Ventura welcome us aboard. They set up the show and preview the matches. George "The Animal" Steele vs Dangerous Danny Davis w/ Jimmy Hart Steele isn't waiting for any bells, and immediately grabs Davis and bites him in the corner. Davis flees the ring. Davis tries to sneak back in and hit The Animal from behind, but his punches have no effect. Steele punches back and Davis is sent through the ropes, to the floor. Once again, he tries a sneak attack, and once again, Steele catches him. They both go to the floor and Steele tries to bring a chair in the ring. The ref stops him, and when The Animal comes in sans chair, Davis uses something from out of his tights to hit Steele. Then he repeatedly uses the object to choke Steele, though it was small and wouldn't be a very effective choker. Now he's...

WWE Recap: Survivor Series (1987)

The first edition of Survivor Series comes to us live from just outside of Cleveland, Ohio. Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse "The Body" Ventura are our announcers. The show will feature just four matches, but each will be battle between 5-man teams (One will feature five tag teams, and thus 10-man teams). I've never been a big fan of these shows, but they had them anyway. Honky Tonk Man, Hercules, Ron Bass, Harley Race, Danny Davis vs Randy "Macho Man" Savage, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake, Ricky "The Dragon" Steaboat, Jake "The Snake" Roberts Beefcake and Hercules will open the match up in the ring. They trade low-impact offensive moves, but Beefcake puts on a sleeper hold pretty quickly. Hercules manages to get to his team, but Ron Bass and Danny Davis both come in. Both catch hip tosses. The referee determines that Davis is the legal man. He's bodyslammed by Beefcake, who then tags in Jake Roberts. Roberts p...

WWE Recap: Saturday Night Main Event (October 1987)

We're in Hershey, Pennsylvania for this episode of Saturday Night Main Event. Vince McMahon and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan are at the announce table. Heenan is fired up. Randy "Macho Man" Savage w/ Elizabeth vs Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart (Intercontinental Championship) The crowd is firmly behind The Macho Man in this one. Before the match starts, a quick WWE history lesson. After Wrestlemania III, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat was the Intercontinental champion, having won a classic match with Savage. The plan was for Steamboat to carry the title for a while, and, presumably, have Savage chase him as the heel. That seemed to be the case in The Dragon's first few defenses of the belt, with Macho watching and acting nuts. However, Steamboat's wife was due to have a baby, and Steamboat asked the WWE for some time off to be with her. Vince McMahon was angry about that, and he randomly had Steamboat drop the title to the Honky Tonk Man. Since Ho...

WWE Recap: Saturday Night Main Event (May 1987)

This one is coming to us from South Bend, Indiana. Vince McMahon and Jesse "The Body" Ventura welcome us aboard. We get footage of Bobby "The Brain" Heenan attacking Ken Patera with a belt. Patera took the belt from him and choked him with it. Now, Heenan is wearing a neck brace. On to the matches. Kamala w/ Mr Fuji and Kim Chee vs Jake "The Snake" Roberts As Roberts hits the ring, he tosses Damien toward Kamala, who runs from the ring. Roberts is told to put the snake back in its bag, but as he does so, Kamala hits him in the back. A bear hug follows that up. Roberts breaks free by stomping on Kamala's bare toes. Jake works on the big man's arm, and continues to stomp his toes, but Kamala bashes him on the head with a fist to get loose. Then he chokes The Snake with his foot. He also delivers a couple of headbutts. Roberts rolls out of the ring, and gets Kamala to chase him. Roberts gets back in the ring first, then knees Kamala in the face ...

WWE Recap: Wrestlemania III (March 1987)

It's time, once again, for the biggest even in professional wrestling. Wrestlemania III comes to us from the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan. We open with Vince McMahon in the ring. He introduces Aretha Franklin, who sings "America the Beautiful". Next, we go to Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse "The Body" Ventura, who are with Mary Hart and Bob Eucker. They take us to the first match. Can-Am Connection vs Don Muraco and Cowboy Bob Orton w/ Mr Fuji Tom Zenk and Muraco start things off, and Zenk knocks down his bigger opponent with a shoulder block. Muraco tries to muscle his way to control, but he misses Zenk in the corner and takes a two count after a takedown. Rick Martel tags in and they hit double-team moves on both Muraco and Orton. The heels regroup outside the ring, then Orton tags in. Orton gets put into an armlock, but the announcers tout his technical abilities, and Monsoon says he has "excellence in execution" which is interesting. Zenk puts Or...

WWE Recap: Saturday Night Main Event (March 1987)

After the opening sequence, Vince McMahon and Jesse "The Body" Ventura greet us with insults for each other. They hype the 20-man battle royal featuring Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant, who are now enemies with Andre being represented by Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. Hogan has some words for us. George "The Animal" Steele vs Randy "Macho Man" Savage w/ Elizabeth (Intercontinental Championship) The championship belt is on the line, and so are the services of Elizabeth, which is weird. She comes to ringside last and will be sitting in a special chair that she has to climb up into. George comes down to help her into the seat, but Savage attacks with an elbow from the top rope. The Macho Man then takes Elizabeth's hand and starts to lead her down the aisle, but is met by Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, who forces them back to the ring area. Steele is waiting for Savage in the ring and meets him with a shot to the back of the head. Savage...

WWE Recap: Saturday Night Main Even (January 1987)

As has the become the norm on Saturday Night Main Event, we open with a series of clips of wrestlers talking about their matches tonight. Then we get to Vince McMahon and Jesse "The Body" Ventura. Behind them, a steel cage is set up and waiting. Steel Cage Match: Mr Wonderful Paul Orndorff w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan vs Hulk Hogan (World Heavyweight Championship) Orndorff is still using Hogan's music as his own upon entrance. Hogan comes down the aisle to a roar from the crowd and climbs over the cage to get inside. Orndorff attacks right away, and uses the championship belt on Hogan's back. He immediately goes for the door, but Hogan grabs his leg. I've always thought that to win, they should have to go over the top, not through the door. Orndorff pounds on the champ, then climbs the cage. He gets about halfway down the outside, when Hogan grabs him by the hair, and drags him back up. Hogan slams Mr Wonderful's face into the cage, then drags h...

WWE Recap: Saturday Night Main Event (November 1986)

Jesse "The Body" Ventura's ugly mug greets us to welcome us to "his town", Los Angeles, California. We get some quick quotes from some of tonight's participants. After the opening montage, we go to Vince McMahon and Ventura at the announcer's table. Ventura has on a toupee. It's not good. Jake "The Snake" Roberts vs Randy "Macho Man" Savage w/ Elizabeth (Intercontinental Championship) We get a battle between two heels here, maybe as a tryout to see who would have a face turn. Before the bell, Roberts intimidates both Savage and Elizabeth with Damien. The two men test each other a bit at the start, with a couple of back and forth arm drags and hair pulls. Savage is clearly afraid of Damien, and doesn't even want to be near the bag. Roberts goes for a couple of early DDTs, but Savage avoids it. The crowd seems to firmly be behind Jake Roberts. The first big move goes to Savage, who knees Roberts in the face as he tries to ...
